Celebrities like Will Ferrel, Amy Adams, and Sarah Silverman joined together to release a video of them singing “Imagine” as a way to inspire people from afar during this trying time. Below you can see the video which CBSNews posted to their Facebook page.
If you’re not familiar with the song, it was originally written and sung by John Lennon of the Beatles. The lyrics are about a world with unity and peace, an inspiring image to be sure.
But many people weren’t exactly inspired by this rendition of the classic song. It became the source of much criticism and even a few jokes after it’s released. One of the first people to poke fun at the video was John Mayer, who released this video in response.
Many jokes pointed out how this video was an impractical response to a global crisis.
Others emphasized the sheer pain they felt watching it.
Some just pointed out the sheer poor quality of the singing.
This edit of the video really emphasized the irony of rich celebrities asking normal people to donate to medical research.
And some were able to criticize the singing and the lack of real impacta all in one beautifully worded statement.
And some made their own more realistic version of what a song titled “Imagine” sounds like in the midst of a global pandemic.
Although well-meaning, perhaps this video and the feedback it received will make celebrities think more in the future about how to use their privilege and wealth in more meaningful ways.
